Geography and Location
The Black Sea is a large inland sea situated at the southeastern extremity of Europe. It lies between Europe and Asia, east of the Balkans, south of the East European Plain, west of the Caucasus, and north of Anatolia.
Connection to the Atlantic Ocean
The oval-shaped Black Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Bosporus Strait, which leads to the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea. This connection makes the Black Sea a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, along with other enclosed and semi-enclosed seas such as the Mediterranean Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Size and Importance
With a surface area of approximately 436,400 square kilometers, the Black Sea ranks as the 13th largest sea in the world and one of the major water bodies in the region. It is a vital waterway for trade and transportation, connecting countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Georgia, Turkey, and Bulgaria.
